Taking it to the Street: The Campaign for Contemporary Art at Aljira
Aljira is embarking on a journey that will culminate with the realization of its vision to expand its influence and outreach through expanded educational programming, an increased capacity to host nationally touring exhibits relevant to the region, and through the introduction of a wide range of art and cultural experiences to the underserved.
Central to this vision is the move to 591 Broad Street, which, through the support of key benefactors, took place in October 2002. This accomplishment marked the completion of Phase I of our construction. The nearly 6,000 square foot facility will provide space for contemporary and performance art, administrative and graphic design studio space, as well as space for community activities.
Aljira moves into Phase II of the campaign with a $2.6 million challenge before it. $1million is needed to complete the renovation of 591 Broad Street and the remaining $1.6 million will support the expansion of our art and educational programming.
Developing Ideas
We have identified key areas of need for art and educational programming in our community. Ideas in the early planning stages include the following:
- Artist-in-Residence: artist residencies in Newark neighborhoods possibly culminating in exhibitions.
- Media Gallery: exhibition space dedicated to media technology.
- Youth Studio Art Program and Working People’s Art Classes: after-school studio art classes including media and art activities.
- Student Docent Program: school partnership for grades 7 through 12 to train young people to conduct tours.
- Visiting Artist Initiative: placing artists in collaboration with art teachers to augment arts curriculum with public, private, and charter schools.
Core Programs
Aljira is currently executing these program activities:
- Exhibitions: Aljira presents innovative exhibitions featuring the work of emerging and underrepresented artists.
- Young Curator Series: introducing high school students to the curatorial process, from exhibition concept and design to public programs and press.
- Aljira at the Academy: satellite exhibition space targeted at children in collaboration with Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts in Montclair, New Jersey.
- Emerge: professional development program designed to provide career development training for emerging artists. Learn more about Emerge.
Aljira will also seek to build its endowment fund throughout the campaign. To this end, generous support has already been received from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Prudential Foundation, the New Jersey Cultural Trust, and private gifts toward the Aljira Endowment Fund.
