Overview

Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art, is an artist-centered institution. The initial impulse for its founding originated with a group of emerging artists in 1983 looking for inexpensive workspace. Aljira was first located in a 5000 square-foot third-floor walk-up loft space in the Roseville section of Newark. The center’s programmatic agenda and mission evolved from the idea of providing opportunities for artists outside the mainstream and delivering cultural services to the underserved.

The extraordinary accomplishments of Aljira’s artists continue to be proof of its programmatic excellence. Aljira artists are founders and developers of arts organizations; they are innovators and activists who, through exhibitions, community action and education outreach programs, bring the arts to underserved audiences; and they function as articulate and persuasive advocates for the arts in New Jersey and beyond.

Aljira Emerge

Solid career-building skills and opportunities to exhibit and present new work are essential to the artistic and professional development of today’s artist. Aljira Emerge is a strategic career management and exhibition program for emerging artists. Under the tutelage of experienced artists and professional coaches, Emerge artists learn how to manage their careers as arts professionals and develop a personal strategic plan.

The program is designed to provide emerging artists with the resources to overcome obstacles, focus on goals, and move forward in their creative careers. Aljira Emerge attempts to address practical areas of concern to artists, such as curatorial practice, legal and financial issues, gallery representation, exhibition and public art opportunities, and marketing. The program culminates with a group exhibition and fully illustrated catalog. The Emerge 11 group exhibition will be curated by Jorge Rojas and presented in 2014.
