Fall Exhibitions at Aljira
September 26 – December 21, 2013
This fall, Aljira presents two unique shows featuring the power and the beauty of the abstract by artists Terry Boddie and Carl E. Hazlewood. Birth of a Cypher: Works by Terry Boddie Boddie’s works explore questions and pose answers: How are language and culture reborn in an alien context under the twin pressures of assimilation and segregation? Can ancient spiritual maps guide and shape us in a geographically and culturally distant land? Temporality and Objects: New Installations and Photographs by Carl E. Hazlewood “The power and beauty of the abstract is that it reveals itself with the simple, yet ineluctable eloquence of every inch of being, and ultimately of the universe…[as expressed in] the resonant poetry of the everyday of which Carl E. Hazlewood returns us to in his…work.” – Olu Oguibe. Join us for the opening reception on September 26, 2013, from 6–9 pm. Upcoming ExhibitionThursday, January 23, 2014 – 6 – 9pm Guest Curator: Alejandro Anreus, PhD. Bending the Grid: Luis Cruz Azaceta: Dictators, Terrorism, War and Exiles represents Cruz Azaceta’s commitment to bearing witness to the political crisis of humanity. His work reflects how he identifies with isolation and oppression and speaks to both the horror and determination that is a part of the journey towards survival and freedom. Aljira’s Bending the Grid is a series which celebrates the careers of outstanding artists chosen among accomplished yet under-recognized national and international practitioners over the age of 65. This exhibition will be on view through April 26, 2014. A fully-illustrated exhibition catalog will also be available for purchase online at www.aljira.org/shopaljira in January. |
